Mission
1: Find the black Greek urn in the Plaka
8:30 am
We wake up and catch the train into Athens, birthplace of Western civ. First
stop: The Acropolis. We enter through the columned archway, the Propylea. Next
door is the temple of Athena Nike.
- Kevos: "Hey, Athena, I'm wearing one of your Nike shirts."From the Acropolis (means "high city" in Greek), we can see
our cruise ship 13 kilometers away. |
Chilling at the Parthenon, Acropolis |
12 pm, The Plaka

A Plaka entrance

We think April likes Darren. What do you think?
|
We head down from the Acropolis,
and into the twisty maze of streets of the Plaka for some good ol' bargaining.
Darrenos is looking for a mask to add to his collection. We also figure we'd be able
to find the ancient Greek black urn here and complete Mission 1. Following the advice of Kevos' friend from Greece, Sotiris, we grab some
lunch at an outdoor cafe in the Plaka. Then we start shopping.
We find a shop run by this lady, Lamprinh
(April). Whenever we try to bargain, she, yells "Hey,
this is a good deal, no less you." Oh well, Kevos buys a Greek shirt and wears it. We
like April so we ask her hubby to snap a pic. We continue on.
As we walk around, we catch some ol' American tunes wafting
from the shop fronts, including "Kiss Me."
- Kevos: "Hey, I heard 'Gettin Jiggy wit' It' yesterday in Kusadasi."
- Darrenos: "These American songs help everyone to learn English."
However, some Greeks speak English well as Darren learns when
he uses a kind of sign language to ask for directions:
- Darren: (pointing questioningly)
- Shop owner: "I know ten languages but I don't know what this (gesticulating
imitationally) is." |
| A few shops down, Darrenos buys a Greek mask
from Stephenos (Stephenos)' mask and
statuette store. - Stephenos: "I love
America. The women are easy.*"
- Darrenos: "Your accent helps. Chicks dig it."
* Stephenos words exactly - we can't help it! |
 |
We find the
black urn at Marilena's shop.
Mission 1 completed!
|
We continue our shopping, and
stumble into a pottery store. Kevos spies a black urn!! Marilena, who works in
the shop with her artist mom, tells us the ancient history of the picture depicted on the
urn.
- Kevos: "That counts. Can we take a pic of this urn for our Web page?"
- Marilena: "Yeah, cool! Our store has a home page too. What's yours?"
So Kevos and Marilena trade Web addresses. |
5 pm
| On the way back to the ship, we
pass a nice sign some of the more vocal locals have written for us tourists. We think they wanted to say, "Hope you had a nice time in Greece.
Welcome back soon!" but just screwed up the translation using the Kosovo
translation dictionary. |

Kevos reads a nice goodbye sign |
6 pm
We embark the ship. It's a bit of a trip (800+ miles) to Vencie, Italy, so
our next day is entirely at sea!
Day 4: What was a day at sea like?
|
Greece

- Gyro
- Souvlaki
- Baklava
- Kevos' Coffee Rating:
Greek coffee, is strong and great, but has some gritty stuff at the bottom. Four
stars.

- Discus thrower in April's shop

- Marilena (Marilena) show us an urn, but it's not the one we're looking for

- Nice poster of Clinton on the wall of the
subway station.
