Day 5

  -- Mission 2:  Find a local!
05canallira.jpg (43436 bytes) 1 pm
We arrive in Venice.  We board the water taxi to Piazza San Marco (St. Mark's square) and find it's crawling with tons of tourists.  From every country.  We hear English, French, German...which makes our Mission 2: Find a local pretty darn challenging!  We figure the trick is to head away from the tourist traps, and into the maze of narrow, twisted Venice side streets.  It's like a labyrinth.

We get some Italian lira as we travel through the streets.

Quanto? Here's a quick price guide of what you can buy in Venice, prices in U.S. bucks.

Water taxi (Venice's bus system- there are no cars), one-way ride Violin concert, 1.5 hours Gondola ride
$3 $18 $50 per person.  Less if you haggle but that definitely loses points in the romance factor
After walking around the side streets for a few hours, we eventually realize that we are...
- Erick: "...exploring."
- Kevino: "...geo-challenged."
- Darren: "..lost."

Along the way, we do see what we think are locals, but with all the tourists around, it's tough to be sure.
- Kev: "Wish our bro Jason were here to help us with his Italian!"
We eventually catch a water taxi back and eat dinner.

SpiderDarren looks for a better view to figure out where we are

We decide that we should check out a local violin concert to be cultured, and there are bound to be some locals there!   Sure enough, we meet Claudia, the friendly usher, who also gives us some free concert posters.

Mission 2: Accomplished!05concert.jpg (58974 bytes)After the concert, Darren and Kevino catch the water taxi back to the ship.
- Erick: "I'm going to take nighttime alley pictures of Venice.  See you back at the ship."
- Darren to Kevino in the water taxi: "He's gettin' lost. Watch."

Local Food
Go to an Italian restaurant near you, and that's about what you can get here too.   There are some novelties:

- Gelato, the soft Italian ice cream.   Reminds Kevino of Hogi Yogi; he tries hazelnut, tiramisu, creme caramel, and berry.

- Kev's Koffee Rating:
Italian coffee is awesome and is what inspired Starbucks in the first place. Five stars.

Darren's
Quotes of the Day

- "Forget the map."

- "I don't know where we are, but it's far from where we were."

12-3 am: Late Night with Erick in Venice

Erick: - I start to walk around the maze of alleys to take nighttime pictures by myself.  The smallest, grittiest, darkest alley the better.  After a few hours of taking pictures, I start heading back to the water taxi dock.  Some guy starts following me, whistling.  It makes me feel like, "Man, I don't want this guy to follow me going down some dark alley."  I  drift off course to avoid this guy, and end up in this neighborhood with lots of graffiti and some un-neighborhoodly characters. I feel like I am in the Harlem of Venice.

Finally, I see these two women hanging out in an alley so I ask them for directions. They speak broken English.
- I say: "San Marco?"
- One woman: "Oh, no, nooo; too far. Far."
- Erick: "Yes, yes, tell me where it is!"
So she gives me directions and I follow them.  Bam!  Right back to San Marco's Square.  San Marco never looked so good.  I run to the water taxi dock to go back to the ship, but I just miss it.  So I find another water shuttle that brings me to an industrial park area near the ship.  It's like walking through an abandoned shipyard.  I finally make it back. Whew!

I think, "I don't think I wanna go back to Venice tomorrow morning.  I think I've seen more than I wanted to see!"

Hahah. What was day 6 like?
