Grand
Canyon
ROCK N ROLL
Previously I've already hiked a
few miles into the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. But I hear
that a helicopter ride is a whole new experience, so I check out the
helicopter brochures. I'm in luck! I find a
helicopter tour that says "See Two Wonders of the World: the
Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon." This tour was made for my
this WOW trip. I sign up on the spot!

GRAND CANYON

CANYON
OF ROCK
|
I jump in the helicopter, for our 45 minutes from Vegas to
the Grand Canyon. As we fly over the desert hills, our
pilot Joe tells us he used to fly in the Vietnam war and other
wars, but decided to pilot Canyon touring cause it's a lot
more relaxed. In fact, he tells us he's had two
engagements on his tour in the past week! |
| As we fly
approach the rim of the canyon, Joe swoops down low,
and then we swoop up and bam, there's the huge
canyon. I had always heard you have to see the
Grand Canyon in real life cause pictures don't do it
justice, and it's true. The canyon is huge, at
once beautiful with shadows dancing on the red rock,
and dangerous, with vertical |
drops of several thousand feet.
We land near the canyon floor,
where we see the Colorado River gently meandering along the
Canyon floor.

WALL OF WATER
|
HOOVER DAM
We also fly over the Hoover Dam, an Engineering Wonder of
the World. The dam looks very majestic on our fly
by. I hear the tour is even better, but have to save
that for another time. |

On route to the Grand Canyon
GRAND CANYON
Feet fact: We're at the West Rim of the Canyon,
closest to Vegas where the Canyon is 5 miles across.
Down at the South Rim, the Canyon is even more impressive,
stretching 30 miles across.
Historic
Fact: Decades ago, the government let the local
Indians own the area we're in and charges the helicopter
companies a landing fee. Joe tells us the tribe
makes $4 million annually. Sure beats selling blankets
and trinkets.
Fun fact: Since there's nothing except nature
to judge distances by, everything at the Canyon is bigger than
it appears. For example, that river in the photo
above is a mile wide. Those little trees on the opposite
bank are 15 feet tall!
Hoover Dam Facts
Feet fact: The dam is 726 feet high, and a
quarter mile wide at the base.
Historic
Fact: Completed in 1935, the dam was the first
structure to contain more masonry than the great pyramid at
Giza. The dam can hold more than 9 trillion gallons of
the Colorado River in its reservoir, Lake Mead.
Fun
fact: Yes, this is the dam Superman tried to save
in the first Superman movie. I can almost see Jimmy
Olson hanging from the dam.
