Ibiza
PLEASURE ISLAND
Ibiza is the smallest of Spainīs three main Balearic islands (like our Hawaiian islands), where Europeans come to vacation in the sun. I need a break from the treeless stone courtyards and really, really old buildings of the past few weeks, so this always-lived-10-min-from- the-coastal Kev hops a plane from hectic Madrid (200€ round trip) to the turquoise blue waters of Ibiza.

I expect the parties Brook Burke raves at and about on the E Travel Channel, but thatīs only in the summer.  Still, I can see why the Phonecians, Arabs, and Romans all occupied Ibiza in the old days, replaced today by the Spanish, French, Germans and Italians who all come here to soak up the sun.

Eivissa is the main port/town.  For an approximate North America comparison, take Catalinaīs small-island town charm and laid- backness, add Old San Juanīs fortress and turquoise waters, and throw in some wild Miami-style clubs featuring foam and water parties and you have Ibiza.  While itīs off season when I visit, I can tell from all the outdoor cafes, souvenir shops and chic boutiques selling pricey clubbing/island-lounge wear, that this place is jumping in the summer (Jun-Aug).

Dalt Vila is the name of the old fortress town part of Eivissa.  Dalt Vita is surrounded a huge wall to protect it from invaders.  You can walk around the maze of zig zag streets to see the old churches, and look at the great view of the harbor from the turrets.

Playa des Salinas is the main beach, but it being a chilly partly cloudy day, the locals tell me Iīd have more fun visiting the cafes around Eivissa.

Since itīs just a 2-hour boat ride away, I take a short 2-day trip to nearby tropical island Mallorca

Eivissaīs port is the launching point for nearby islands.

The view of the cafe-packed plaza from the 5th floor of my Hostal Parque.  Not bad for a hostel!
