Porvoo
Just an hour away from Helsinki, the small
town Porvoo oozes rustic charm. Itīs a nice break from relatively hectic
Helsinki, with its charming riverfront houses.

As I walk by the Cathedralīs bell tower, I happen
upon a costume troop thatīs about to reenact the founding of Porvoo for some
schoolchildren. The kiddies havenīt shown up, so I ask for a photo and
quick history lesson. Alexander I (that lady is dressed up as old Alex in
the middle) of Russia drew up the articles that created Finland in Porvoo, so
heīs famous, and Porvoo too. There's a statue of him in the church.
The lady to the right is supposed to be his wife, and I guess thatīs the
priest who marries them.
Then itīs back to Helsinki
and then off to Stockholm. |

Charming houses in Porvoo.

These Runecakes are traditional in the town, made famous because the
Finnish writer Rneīs wife would make them. Theyīre like
muffins with raspberry jam on top and in the center.

Anna, the ice cream girl, serves up some tasty berry ice cream - we
think itīs ligonberry or blackberry. Ribes Nero if anyone can
translate.

Those charming houses again. I think
thatīs the third time Iīve used charming on this page...
